Statement from Dr. Alan Bernstein on "Out of the Shadows at Last," the Senate Committee's Final Report on Mental Health, Mental Illness and Addiction

On May 9, 2006, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology released "Out of the Shadows at Last" a report on mental health, mental illness and addiction, chaired by the Honourable Michael J.L. Kirby and Deputy Chair Senator Wilbert Keon.

The report recognizes the central role that health research and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) must play in providing the necessary evidence to plan and deliver mental health services and recommends new resources for CIHR to deliver on this recommendation.

The Senate Committee also draws attention to the importance of facilitating knowledge exchange among decision-makers, providers and consumer groups and the central role of CIHR, as both a funder of research and the mobilization of that research into real world applications.

The report places emphasis on strategic partnerships with the private and non-profit sectors. As an agency that places great emphasis on cooperation, collaboration and partnerships, CIHR recognizes the critical importance of partnerships in delivering on its mandate.
