CIHR President Congratulates Dr. Henry Friesen on CMA Award

I am delighted to congratulate Dr. Henry Friesen on being awarded the F.N.G. Starr Award by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). As well as being an internationally known medical scientist, leader and educator, Dr. Friesen was the distinguished President of the Medical Research Council in the 1990s and led the process that resulted in the vision and creation of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. Friesen, a specialist in the field of endocrinology, is known for his discovery of the human hormone prolactin, which has allowed for more effective fertility treatments for tens of thousands of women. He has published more than 400 articles in leading scientific journals. His contribution to Canadian health research, as a scientist, a leader, and a visionary has been truly exceptional.

The F.N.G Starr award is the highest honour CMA bestows on its members. Dr. Friesen is the 41st Canadian to be so honoured. On behalf of CIHR and the entire Canadian health research community, I congratulate Henry on receiving this well-deserved honour.

Dr. Alan Bernstein, O.C., FRSC
President, Canadian Institutes of Health Research
