Dr. Ruth McPherson is a leading physician-scientist in Canada in the area of cardiovascular disease. She received her MD from the University of Toronto and her Ph.D. from the University of London (UK). As a full professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and Director of the Lipid Clinic and Lipid Research Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Dr. McPherson maintains involvement in both basic and clinical research. She has served on a number of important committees including the Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship Committee, co-chair of the heart and Stroke Foundation Metabolism Committee, the Medical Research Council Advisory Committee on Science, the health Canada Working Group on Dyslipidemia and Cardiovascular Disease, and the heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Women, Heart Disease and Stroke Consensus Committee. Dr. McPherson has been honoured for her work in both Europe and Canada, and has been awarded peer-reviewed funding for almost ten research projects. She has edited one book, ten chapters in academic texts, 45 papers in refereed journals, four papers in refereed conference proceedings, and has had 36 papers read. Dr. Ruth McPherson will, as the Wyeth-Ayerst Canada Inc. Clinical Research Chair in Cardiovascular Disease, will study: Dr. McPherson is involved in both basic and clinical research and is widely recognized as a vocal advocate of issues related to women's health. Her research is multidisciplinary, and integrative with a unique bench-to-bedside approach.

Dr. Hans Zingg was born in 1944, in Zurich, Switzerland, and retains both Swiss and Canadian citizenship. Dr. Zingg was educated in the two countries, receiving his M.D. from the University of Basel, in Switzerland and his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Zingg is an innovative physician-scientist and one of Canada's leading reproductive endocrinologists with international renown. He has held academic appointments, and has been honoured for his research in Europe, the United States and Canada. Dr. Zingg is widely published in the area of Endocrinology, with almost 50 published papers in peer-reviewed journals, 15 chapters in medical textbooks, one co-edited book on Vasopressin and Oxytocin, and 67 abstracts presented at numerous scientific association and society meetings. Dr. Zingg was recently mandated to organize the International Congress on Oxytocin and Vasopressin held this past year, in Montreal. As the first Wyeth-Ayerst Canada Inc. Clinical Research Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology, Dr. Hans Zingg will study Direct interactions between steroids and G-protein-linked receptors: A novel non-genomic mechanism of steroid action and a new basis for drug development.

Dr. Harriet MacMillan is well-recognized as a "star' of Canadian psychiatry. She was born in 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland, pursued her medical training in Canada and retains both U.S. and Canadian citizenship. Dr. MacMillan was awarded her M.D. from Queen's University in Kingston and trained as a resident at the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. She has been awarded many grants and fellowships and is currently at McMaster University as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics with Associate Memberships in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Department of Psychology. Dr. MacMillan is also a Clinical Associate at the Hamilton-Wentworth Department of Public Health Services and on staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, both in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. MacMillan is a member in good standing of many professional associations, and is an external reviewer for the Ontario Mental Health Foundation, Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation and the Medical Research Council of Canada, as well as a journal reviewer for the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, and Social Science and Medicine. Dr. MacMillan has published 23 journal articles, with two more in press, four book chapters, one book, and has presented at over fifty meetings. Dr. MacMillan's research focuses on child maltreatment and its relationship to psychiatric illness in women. Dr. MacMillan's work stands out for its rigor and academic excellence and for which she has held a leadership position in this area internationally. Her broad approach spans the epidemiological, psychological and biological. Dr. MacMillan's commitment to developing strategies which improve the mental health of one of the most at-risk groups of women in the population - those who have experienced maltreatment in childhood - is to be commended. Dr. Bryan Richardson is a professor at the University of Western Ontario (UWO), in London, Ontario, in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Physiology. He is a past Director of the Maternal-Fetal medicine Training Program at the University and is currently the Director of the Medical Research Council Group in Fetal and Neonatal Health and Development with the Lawson Research Institute at UWO. Dr. Richardson received his MD from UWO and trained as a Resident in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St. Joseph's Hospital, University Hospital, Victoria Hospital, and Hotel Dieu Hospital in Windsor. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Perinatal Research Society where he has been elected to the Executive Council until the year 2000. Dr. Richardson has sat on almost 15 panels and workshops, is a reviewer for the Medical Research Council Clinical Investigation Committee and the Alberta Heritage Foundation Clinical Applications Advisory Committee. He sat on a dozen journal review committees and has supervised 11 research trainees. Dr. Richardson has presented at and been invited to speak at 85 professional meetings. He has published 82 articles, 13 book chapters and symposia, and 188 abstracts. As the first Wyeth-Ayerst Canada Inc. Clinical Research Chairs in Women's Health for Perinatology, Dr. Richardson will study the controls of normal fetal and neonatal development and to develop non-invasive methods for assessing fetal health in order to provide a basis for further advances in obstetric and neonatal management. |
