1. **Official Launch** Cardiovascular Complications of Diabetes Initiative and Request for Applications (ICRH contact: Elissa Hines Reimer, tel: 613-954-0544)

The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health and partners are very pleased to launch the Cardiovascular Complications of Diabetes Strategic
Initiative and accompanying Request for Applications (RFA).

The purpose of this Strategic Initiative is to further strengthen our understanding of the causes, biological mechanisms, treatment, risk factors and prevention of cardiovascular complications of type 1 and 2 diabetes in individuals affected by diabetes, including Aboriginal Peoples, children and youth, the elderly and other vulnerable populations from Canada and other countries, by supporting important research in this area. It is expected that this targeted investment will lead to improved prevention, treatment and management protocols (e.g., clinical care), more effective pharmaceutical drugs and a better understanding of the interaction between the diabetic state and other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

The following two RFAs are being launched under the Cardiovascular Complications of Diabetes Strategic Initiative:

A. New Discoveries: High-Risk Seed Grants RFA
Funds available - up to $150,000/year for a maximum of two years
Registration Deadline: April 1, 2006
Application Deadline: June 15, 2006

B. Team Grants RFA
Funds available - up to $750,000/year for a maximum of five years
Registration Deadline: April 1, 2006
Application deadline: June 15, 2006

Depending on the level of support from partners, it is anticipated that several Team Grants and New Discoveries: High-Risk Seed Grants will be funded.   To view and/or download a copy of the announcement and accompanying RFAs, please visit the Strategic Initiative Announcement website.

2. **Official Launch** Call for Letters of Interest to Host the 2007 Young Investigators (YI) Forum

The National Research Forum for Young Investigators (YI) in Circulatory and Respiratory Health is a major training and educational initiative of the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) and its many partners. Trainees and young investigators (e.g., junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, undergraduate and graduate students, clinician trainees) interested in the causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood vessels, blood, critical and intensive care, and sleep are the focus of this meeting.

To date, ICRH has sponsored three YI Forums. We wish to expand on the successes of past YI Forums, and through this "Call for Letters of Interest", we invite research groups and leaders to indicate their interest in hosting and co-organizing with ICRH the 2007 YI Forum and potentially, the 2008 YI Forum.

4. China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative - Grants Program

In December 2005, a delegation comprised of representatives from CIHR and Canadian researchers visited the National Natural Science Foundation in China (NSFC). During this visit, CIHR signed a collaborative agreement with the NSFC. In follow-up to this agreement, a Request for Applications (RFA) program has been launched in which the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) is one of the partnering Institutes. The program is jointly managed and funded by the CIHR and NSFC. Its aim is to promote the development of Canadian-Chinese scientific co-operation between universities, hospitals, research institutes or affiliated research organizations in Canada and China through the support of collaborative research grants. The objective of this program is to promote joint research projects with Chinese colleagues (i.e., 30,000$ CDN/year for 3 years on the Canadian side and 150,000 RMB/year for 3 years on the Chinese side).

For more information about the RFA, please visit the China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative - Grants Program.
