Strategic Training Initiatives in Health Research (STIHR)

The Network for Oral Research Training and Health (NORTH)

Directors: Graeme K. Hunter, Ph.D., School of Dentistry, University of Western Ontario
Paul Santerre, Ph.D., Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto
Website: northdentalresearch.ca

The Network for Oral Research Training and Health (NORTH) offers undergraduate students at Canadian schools of dentistry opportunities to participate in summer research projects at their own school or elsewhere in the Network. NORTH mentors provide training opportunities in all four pillars of CIHR and all aspects of oral health science (e.g., oral microbiology, epidemiology of caries, biomaterials, craniofacial development). Research findings are presented annually at a unique electronic conference hosted by the NORTH website. To apply, please visit the NORTH website.

Objectives: First, by increasing the numbers of DDS/DMD graduates entering careers in academic dentistry, we aim to ameliorate a growing manpower crisis in Canadian dental schools. Second, by expanding the pool of dental graduates who are committed to research, we aim to strengthen the quantity and quality of oral health research in Canada and thereby contribute to the development of affordable preventive strategies and effective therapies for oral disease.

All ten Canadian dental schools (Dalhousie, Laval and McGill Universities, and the Universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Montreal, Saskatchewan, Toronto and Western Ontario) are participants in NORTH. Each school has a local NORTH coordinator and provides a member to the Advisory Committee; faculty members from each school are invited to submit projects annually; students from each school are invited to apply for projects at their own institution or elsewhere. In addition to IMHA, our partners include Dentsply Canada, 3M ESPE, Canadian Association of Dental Research and the Canadian Dental Association.

NORTH is a virtual network: applications are made via the website, the Advisory Committee meets by teleconference and research findings are presented at an interactive electronic poster conference. Since 2002, we have funded 90 students, representing all ten dental schools. More information about our training program can be found at the website.
