Strategic Training Initiatives in Health Research (STIHR)

Health Research is becoming increasingly multidisciplinary and multisectoral involving researchers, caregivers, industry, policymakers and governments. New multidisciplinary training models are required at all levels to encourage collaborative work, communication with the public and management of large collaborative projects. As a result, in 2001, CIHR and its partners launched the innovative and ambitious Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR). The objectives of the program are to:

  • Increase the capacity of the Canadian health research community.
  • Enable recruitment and retention of highly qualified individuals from Canada and abroad.
  • Support the development of innovative, effective transdisciplinary, and internationally competitive training programs.
  • Engage new mentors and educators in the development and evolution of training strategies.
  • Encourage programs that embrace diverse research disciplines and methodological processes to resolve major health issues and scientific challenges; integrate training and discussion on ethical issues; develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills, incorporate effective research strategies that translate knowledge into practice.

Training program grants support groups of mentors and educators accomplished in health research to work collaboratively to offer an interdisciplinary and innovative research training program. Potential trainees apply directly to successful training programs for admission and stipend support.

The following twelve strategic training centres, situated across the country, fall under the mandate of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA).
