Under the sponsorship of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), leading research centres in the area of pediatric pain have joined to provide a training consortium to strengthen the preparation of trainees to become independent investigators.

Pain in Child Health's goal is to develop a community of scholars in pediatric pain. The consortium offers supplementary funding for trainees, a summer/fall institute, national lab meetings by means of web distance tools, trainee visits to the primary research centres, international speakers series, and web based courses on pain. With funds from a private foundation, we have developed an international component with trainees from the US, Great Britain, Belgium, Spain and Australia.

Membership in the consortium is open to those with a commitment to pain in child health in any discipline and at any level in their training and approval by the management committee. Application details are available on the program website. Membership makes trainees eligible for (but does not guarantee) financial assistance. The major training centres are Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Saskatoon and Vancouver.

Strategic partners in this training program include over 30 co-investigators conducting research in the field of pain in child health at Canadian institutions: Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis, Institute of Gender and Health, Institute of Cancer Research, Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health, Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, Mayday Fund, Jannsen Pharmaceutical, Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation.
