The Quality of Life Program is a Strategic Training Program that aims to develop health research leaders who can produce evidence on rehabilitation which is so urgently required and ensure that it is translated into improvements in quality of life.

QLP has four main objectives:

  1. To deliver a unique graduate training program that will provide broad interdisciplinary research training focused on quality of life research within rehabilitation.
  2. To fulfill the urgent need for highly qualified rehabilitation scientists in Canada who have a solid foundation in quality of life research.
  3. To prepare rehabilitation trainees for independent research careers by fostering collaborative research experiences across the different university and research environments; and to provide specific training and research skills in the conduct of research in rehabilitation and quality of life.
  4. To increase the quantity and quality of research related to rehabilitation and quality of life by engaging in and developing highly capable rehabilitation researchers through innovative and outcome-focused research training.

QLP is offered through a partnership between McMaster University and the University of British Columbia with support from the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis. The program began in September 2004 and is designed for graduate students at McMaster or UBC who are occupational therapists, physical therapists or individuals who have clinical or research experience in rehabilitation.

A variety of learning opportunities which complement the traditional graduate requirements are offered to eligible students. Online problem-based learning courses allow for flexibility and provide further training in quality of life research. Trainees have the opportunity to participate in a publication and grant writing workshop as well has gain interdisciplinary experience through a research practicum. Progress in meeting the specific educational outcomes is monitored though a personal training plan specific to rehabilitation and quality of life research.

Over 20 faculty at both UBC and McMaster University provide valuable expertise as QLP mentors and come from a broad range of research areas in rehabilitation. Mentors have proven supervisory experience of students in the areas of Healthy Aging, Neuromusculoskeletal Health and Participation in Work and Society.
