Application Process

1. Review the CIHR Research Grants Guidelines.

2. Print and read the following PDFs to familiarize yourself with the application requirements:

4. Have your PIN ready.

5. Have your application number ready (this number is sent by CIHR after registration).

6. Log into the CIHR Web forms, select "Create New Application" and choose "Research Resource" from the list of funding opportunities.

7. Complete the Research Module - [Web Forms].

Need for the Equipment and/or Maintenance, and Information on Main Users

A) Attach up to 2 pages numbered Page 8a and 8b

Briefly describe the core research resource being requested, as well as the needs that would be satisfied. State the benefits of submitting a Research Resource application as opposed to an operating grant application. Also indicate the location of the closest facility to your workplace that already houses similar resources for which funds are being requested and describe the ease with which this equipment, service or tool may be used, in terms of accessibility and travel requirements. Include the overall situation at your institution(s) and/or city with respect to the availability of the required resource. For one time funding requests exceeding $150,000, applicants are required to explain why they are not seeking funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

B) Attach one page numbered Page 9

Identify the types and number of main users (i.e. applicants) and the estimated total level of utilization. List the name of each applicant along with their sources of grant support including the grant number, title, amount per year, and term of grant (i.e. start and end dates) for each funded project that the request is proposed to support.

C) Response to previous reviews - Attach up to two pages numbered Page 10a and 10b (only if applicable)

Applicants may respond to previous reviewers' comments if this is a resubmission of an unsuccessful application. The response should stand alone, and should not require reference to any other documents because the reviewers do not have access to previous application information.

D) Attach one page numbered Page 11

Describe how the equipment or services will be directed and monitored (e.g., the role of a user committee or Board of Directors).

E) Attach one page numbered Page 12

Describe how user priorities will be established (if applicable).

F) Attach one page numbered Page 13

Describe how the equipment, services or tools will be managed financially, including whether user fees will be levied. There should be adequate recovery of costs for consumables and technical support for specimen preparation and routine instrument operations via user fees recovery and so forth. Please indicate any institutional commitments to the required equipment, services or tools.

G) Attach one page numbered Page 14

Describe how the equipment will be used and/or the services provided at the operational level (e.g., techniques to be used, roles of personnel and co-applicants, communication with potential users).

H) Attach one page numbered Page 15

Describe the background and attach the curriculum vitae of the individual(s) responsible for running the required equipment or services on a day-to-day basis.

I) Attach Summary of Projects numbered Page 16a, 16b, 16c etc.

Research summaries are required for each Applicant in regards to the funded research projects that the requested is meant to support.

For each Applicant, attach a maximum of 2 pages entitled "Summary of Project" that include:

  1. the related project title, source of funding, grant number, amount per year, term (i.e., start and end dates)
  2. a description of the level of current utilization (if applicable)
  3. a description of the expected/potential level of utilization if the application is approved   (e.g. number of hours of instrument time)
  4. the publications arising from these projects in the past five years

Additional users may choose to provide a letter of support, to be included in the Appendix.

J) Attach Support from Other Sources Page 17 (no page limit)

Describe the other sources of financial support for the request, which could include: cost-sharing arrangements with the sponsoring institution(s), industry, or other agencies; institutional expenditures involved in upgrading or construction facilities to house the equipment; indirect institutional support such as provision of services and computing resources; user fees.

Summarize information on other support (currently held or applied for) which has budgetary overlap with this application.

K) Attach Use of Equipment Page 18 (no page limit)

Provide the percentage of educational (%), clinical (%), industrial (%) and research (%) demands to be placed on the equipment for which maintenance support is being requested. It must be stressed that CIHR's objective is the support of research. While CIHR will consider educational, clinical, industrial and/or production oriented service components, these must be minor relative to the research being promoted.

Provide a brief description of the educational, clinical, industrial and/or production oriented service anticipated.
