Application Guidelines and Process
We invite applications from students in graduate training and post-doctoral fellows in applied health services and policy and/or population and public health research for the 2005 Summer Institute to be held in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland in June 2005.
Background
The 2005 Summer Institute will be jointly hosted by SafetyNet and the Eastern Canada Consortium on Workplace Health and Safety based at Memorial University of Newfoundland, the RURAL Centre for Research Development and the Atlantic Network for Prevention Researchers based at Dalhousie University, and the Atlantic Regional Training Centre based in all four provinces. This is the 4th annual Summer Institute funded by the CIHR Institutes of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) and Population and Public Health (IPPH).
Aim / Objectives
The aim of the 2005 Summer Institute is to provide a complementary training opportunity to students in applied health services and policy and/or population and public health research across disciplines, sectors, and institutions, by bringing together researchers, decision-makers and community learners from across Canada and from a variety of disciplines.
Participants will:
- Explore the challenges of planning and carrying out interdisciplinary applied and community-linked research in rural and remote settings;
- Discuss a range of population and public health and health services and policy issues that reflect the diversity of the populations living in rural and remote parts of Canada;
- Network with other young researchers as well as with mentors experienced in conducting interdisciplinary research and in making policy, administrative, clinical and public health decisions that impact Canada's rural and remote areas.
Eligibility
- Applicants must currently be enrolled in a Master's or PhD program or hold a postdoctoral fellowship at a Canadian university.
- Preference will be given to students who are (Students who do not fall into either of these categories may still apply and will be considered based on space availability):
- participants in a CHSRF / CIHR (CADRE), or other CIHR training program, or
- funded by a national or provincial research award (e.g., from CIHR, SSHRC, CHSRF, MSFHR, AHFMR, FRSQ, NSHRF).
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status
- Applicants must have research interests and (where relevant) thesis topic in health services and policy and/or population and public health research
- Applicants must be committed to attending the entire Summer Institute
- Applicants must not have attended any of the three previous Summer Institutes funded by CIHR's IPPH or IHSPR.
Selection Procedure
A student application review committee will select a limited number of students, based on eligibility criteria, research interests, range of disciplinary backgrounds, letters of support, and geographical distribution.
Expenses
The Summer Institute will cover the following costs:
- Travel - lowest price economy air ticket from the applicant's home town to destination (domestic flights only). Ground transportation from Deer Lake airport to the hotel and back will be provided. The travel cost from home to the airport and back will be borne by the participants.
- Accommodation - will be arranged and paid for by the organizers of the 2005 Summer Institute for five nights stay (shared occupancy).
- Meals - three meals per day will be provided for the full duration of the 2005 Summer Institute
The participant is responsible for any additional meals/transportation/hotel and incidentals expenses.

- Contact Information - full name, mailing address, telephone, fax, e-mail
- Academic Background - list the university degrees you have obtained, with the year of graduation and the institution from which you have received the degree
- Current Academic Status - provide the institution, name of the program, the number of years you have been in the program, and when you expect to graduate (or, for post-docs, the term of the post-doctoral fellowship), and university student number
- General Research / Thesis Interests - provide title and summary of your thesis or current research project(s) or, if not (yet) working on a thesis, a summary of your research interests. The summary must not exceed 250 words
- Training Expectations and Contributions - provide an overview of how the 2005 Summer Institute fits with the direction of your studies/career path. Include any expectations of what you want to get from the Summer Institute and what you can contribute. Include comments and experiences working with agency practitioners/decision makers in health and other relevant sectors. Must not exceed 250 words
- Enclosures -
- copy of CV (maximum 3 pages). CVs on CIHR, SSHRC or Common CV forms will be accepted.
- letter of recommendation from your thesis supervisor or post-doctoral mentor/supervisor
