Research

The Research Portfolio is responsible for all CIHR's research support activities including: design and development of research funding mechanisms, funding and supporting the research through administration of CIHR's programs, evaluating the programs and the results achieved and providing feedback to the planning cycle. The Research Portfolio works in close collaboration with the CIHR Institutes in fulfilling its key responsibilities.

The Research Portfolio is composed of four units that work closely together.

Knowledge Creation Programs administers research grants competitions and is responsible for the peer review of grant applications.

Research Capacity Development administers funding programs that support trainees and independent investigators and assist researchers applying to CIHR through an information service and by coordinating grantscraft sessions. In addition, this unit assists CIHR review committee members through management of orientation programs.

Research Translation Programs administers funding programs designed to translate research findings into applications such as improved health products and health care practices and services.

Research Planning and Resourcing unit supports the senior scientific leadership of CIHR in developing and implementing a coherent set of research funding programs that support CIHR's strategic objectives. This unit works closely with others in the Research Portfolio and the Institutes to coordinate the design, development and communication of CIHR's research funding opportunities and to support continuous improvement of CIHR's peer review processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Knowledge Creation Programs; i.e., the research grants programs administrated by CIHR and the required peer review processes;
  2. Research Capacity Development, i.e., the training and salary support programs for researchers;
  3. Research Translation Programs, i.e., research grants programs designed to transform research results into application;
  4. Research Planning
