The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC) is an internationally recognized biomedical and health-care hospital research center. Based in Montreal—a city with a growing in reputation as a leader in biotechnology—the institute supports over 500 researchers, 1000 graduate and post-doctoral students and operates more than 300 laboratories devoted to a broad spectrum of fundamental and clinical research.

The Research Institute operates at the forefront of new knowledge, innovation and technology, in a unique environment that stimulates interdisciplinary research. In 2004, our investigators generated close to $100 million in public and private research funds, and published over 1200 peer reviewed scientific papers.

The institutes activities are inextricably linked to the clinical programs of the MUHC, facilitating the transfer of research-based knowledge to clinicians and managers, and ensuring that patients receive constantly improving care. This unique research environment leads to countless new health-care innovations, including new products, diagnostics and therapeutics. Last year alone, Research Institute investigators reported over thirty new inventions to McGill’s Technology Transfer Office.

Research at the RI MUHC continues to move from strength to strength; every year, the Institute recruits talented new academics from around the world. The planned redevelopment of the MUHC on two campuses will include a new research facility that will enhance our research capacity.
