Institute of Genetics (IG)

Chemistry Focus Forum in Edmonton, on July 19-20, 2002

The CIHR Institute of Genetics, Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, Institute of Cancer Research and Institute of Infection and Immunity are pleased to sponsor the

Chemistry Focus Forum

In Edmonton, on July 19-20, 2002 organized by the
Hospital for Sick Children/University of Toronto and
Department of Biochemistry, University of Alberta

The Chemistry Focus Forum will address the emerging research opportunities at the interface of chemical and biomedical health research. Furthermore, this forum will discuss long-term strategies for moving Canadian research forward, in this field.

This forum is the beginning of an initiative to promote studies integrate cutting-edge organic chemistry into the study of biological problems. Currently, the disciplines of chemistry and biological/medical research are essentially separate in both training and practice. While there are many examples in which organic synthesis has made outstanding advances in understanding and manipulating biological systems, this has, for the most part, been clinically or commercially driven. Recent progress in proteomics and informatics has created a environment for the cross fertilization of organic chemistry with biology/medicine via the synthesis of small bioactive modulators, as well as unique imaging probes and opportunities to monitor real time biological processes. Canadian and international efforts in this field will be addressed by keynote speakers, followed by an open discussion.
