45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies (CFBS)

The CFBS hosts an annual scientific meeting that brings together government, industrial and university researchers for the discussion of relevant themes. The two main themes of the June 2002 meeting held in Montreal were Neurological Development, and Physical Activity, Nutrition and Chronic Disease. The Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) and the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes were exhibitors, and III sponsored a science policy forum on bioterrorism. Speaking to an audience of approximately 70 people at the forum, Dr. Donald Low of Mount Sinai Hospital summarized what the health care community has learned since Sept. 11 about agents of bioterrorism and necessary considerations for dealing with them. Dr. William Leiss of Queen's University and the University of Calgary underlined potential bioterrorism catastrophes that could occur in North America, and presented several scenarios for action in the face of these risks. Throughout the meeting, III representatives fielded queries from many of the 500 registrants regarding CIHR, III, funding application procedures and career opportunities in science.
