HIV / AIDS Research Program

CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) and Health Canada have a collaborative program to fund meritorious research grants and research personnel awards across the entire spectrum of HIV/AIDS research. In keeping with the intent of the Canadian Strategy on HIV/AIDS (CSHA), the HIV/AIDS Research Program promotes Canadian research, which provides the scientific base for the development of effective HIV/AIDS programs and policy.

Since July 1, 2001, on behalf of the CSHA, CIHR has administered HIV/AIDS research grants and personnel awards in all areas of health research including: biomedical, clinical sciences, health systems and services, and the social, cultural and other factors that affect the health of populations; and the infrastructure support for the Canadian HIV Trials Network. As of April 1, 2004 CIHR also administers the CSHA HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research Program.

Community-Based Research Program

CIHR is pleased to now administer the Community-Based Research Program. This program, previously administered by Health Canada, was transferred to CIHR on April 1, 2004. The purpose of the program is to support the goals of the CSHA by ensuring that communities, through research, have the knowledge to develop appropriate and effective responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is intended to provide dedicated funding in support of research relevant to community-based organizations in order to facilitate the attainment of their policy, program and service delivery goals.

The Community-Based Research Program has two streams - the Aboriginal stream and the General (non-Aboriginal) stream - and each stream has two components - a research component and a capacity-building component. The program is supported by $1.8 million annually of which $0.8 million is dedicated to the Aboriginal stream and $1 million to the General stream.

CIHR welcomes this new program and community of researchers and will launch a call for community-based applications in summer 2004.

Investigator-Initiated Research Program

HIV/AIDS related proposals are eligible and encouraged to apply to all of CIHR's regular research funding and personnel award programs (e.g., operating grants, randomized controlled trials, training awards). Applicants should refer to the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide for complete information on all of CIHR's funding opportunities and application deadlines.

HIV/AIDS Research Priority Announcement

The Institute of Infection and Immunity invites HIV/AIDS-related applications to the regular fall operating grants, doctoral research awards, fellowships and clinician-scientists competitions. The intent of this priority announcement is to encourage proposals in all areas of HIV/AIDS research.

The HIV/AIDS Research Program will support applications submitted to some or all of these competitions which are deemed scientifically meritorious but which are not funded through the open competitions. To be eligible for funding through this initiative, the major scientific focus of the application must be on HIV/AIDS.
The regular deadline dates and application procedures apply. For further information please review the full Institute Priority Announcement.

Institute Strategic Initiatives

The Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) is CIHR's lead institute for HIV/AIDS research. To date, CIHR-III and other CIHR Institutes have launched several Requests for Applications that are relevant to HIV/AIDS research.

Social and Behavioural Research Issues in HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C (III)
Aboriginal Community-Based Research (IAPH)
Global Health Research Pilot Project Grants (IPPH, IAPH, ICRH, IGH, IHSPR, III)
Global Health Research Program Development and Planning Grants (IPPH, IAPH, ICRH, IGH, III, INMHA, INMD)
Improving Access to Appropriate Services for Marginalized Groups (IHSPR, IGH, IAPH)
HIV/AIDS (IAPH, III)

CIHR-III has established a CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Advisory Committee that consists of representatives from five CIHR Institutes, Health Canada, Ministerial Council on HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS researchers and community organizations. This committee will provide advice on research priorities and the development of future HIV/AIDS related Requests for Applications. Strategic HIV/AIDS Requests for Applications will be supported by the HIV/AIDS Research Program.
