On behalf of the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), I welcome you to the second Celebration of Excellence in Canadian Health Research. CIHR is proud to partner with the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Health Charities Council of Canada and the Council for Health Research in Canada, to honour exceptional people for their remarkable contributions to health research. Each recipient of tonight's awards has demonstrated excellence in the pursuit of new knowledge. Collectively, the recipients have helped to make Canada a healthier, more innovative and prosperous nation. The Michael Smith Prize in Health Research, CIHR Distinguished Investigators, the Peter Lougheed/CIHR New Investigator and the Distinguished Leadership Award are among the highest honours the health research community bestows upon its peers. This year, they are joined by two new awards: the Knowledge Translation Award and the Partnership Award. These new awards are a reminder that health research is a partnership between researchers, host institutions, funders, caregivers, policy makers and the public. Just as health researchers are part of a wider community, so is CIHR. I am delighted that the University of Ottawa is joining CIHR in sponsoring this Celebration of Excellence. Since its creation in June 2000, CIHR has helped to foster an atmosphere of excellence, innovation and discovery, of problem-based, multi-disciplinary groundbreaking collaboration. Now, as we move forward with CIHR's Blueprint for health research, it is fitting that we pause and recognize those whose work has taken us to this point. Thank you for attending tonight's event and, more importantly, for your continued support of health research in Canada. Alan Bernstein |
