Dr. Peter Singer's contributions have included improvements in quality end-of-life care, fair priority setting in health care organizations, pandemic influenza planning and teaching bioethics. His current research focus is global health, in particular harnessing life sciences to improve health in developing countries. He is Co-Director of the Canadian Program in Genomics and Global Health, Senior Scientist at the McLaughlin Centre for Molecular Medicine, and a Distinguished Investigator of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Dr. Singer studied internal medicine at the University of Toronto, medical ethics at the University of Chicago, and clinical epidemiology at Yale University. Between 1995 and 2006, Professor Singer was Sun Life Financial Chair in Bioethics, Director of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics, and Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Singer is the recipient of many awards and published more than 200 articles. He has held $50 million in research grants, including three large grants from Genome Canada. He has trained more than 50 graduate students and fellows, many of whom have leadership positions in bioethics around the world. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges for Global Health Initiative, and of the US National Academies Committee, which reported recently on "Globalization, Biosecurity, and the Future of the Life Sciences". He is board Chair of Branksome Hall School for Girls.

The CIHR Michael Smith Prize in Health Research: Canada's Health Researcher of the Year honours the memory of the late Dr. Michael Smith who shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1993. This prestigious award recognizes innovation, creativity, leadership and dedication to health research, providing world-class researchers with funding to pursue critical research, and to support and mentor trainees.
