Dr. Nazeem Muhajarine is an academic who moves with ease between the university, the community and government, building links, sharing expertise and inspiring action to create healthy communities for children, families and all citizens. Trained in the science of social epidemiology but steeped in the values of community development, Dr. Muhajarine has provided leadership in bringing together university researchers and community organizations to identify research questions, implement studies to address these questions and making the findings accessible and useful.

Through his research, Dr. Muhajarine seeks to shed light on how the social contexts in which children live - their families and their neighbourhood - help or hinder them in their early years. Findings from his team's research have contributed to improved programs and services for children in several ways: Saskatoon's school boards have initiated major literacy programs and are exploring the effectiveness of full-time kindergarten, while the city's public library has improved access to services in underprivileged areas. Currently, his team is working with the provincial ministry of learning to assess several other full-time kindergarten programs and to find out whether the Saskatchewan government's early childhood intervention program KidsFirst is helping high-risk children and their families.

Dr. Muhajarine is passionate about making a difference in society through his research and through mentoring colleagues and students. Through his work, he has changed school and health systems in Saskatchewan for the better.

The CIHR Knowledge Translation Award recognizes merit in an exceptional individual or team currently involved in a collaborative health research or development project that aims to advance and expand the understanding of knowledge translation and also leads to improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened health care system. One award recognizes exceptional research in the area of knowledge translation, while the other recognizes knowledge translation in action.
