Resources for Health Professionals

There are a number of new approaches available for health professionals and other intermediaries to help someone quit smoking.

Cessation Protocols for Pregnant and Postpartum Women

Smoking during pregnancy has harmful health effects for both the woman and the fetus. These protocols are designed to support existing Canadian smoking cessation telephone helplines (or quitlines) in reaching pregnant and postpartum women who smoke.

The Stepped-Care Model

This approach to cessation involves matching smokers to the right quit smoking program (i.e. self-help, counselling, nicotine replacement therapies, or any combination of approaches) based on level of addiction and social support. The model is currently being pilot-tested in Prince Edward Island and Prince George, B.C.

The Fax Referral Program for Quitlines

The Fax Referral Program brings patients and evidence-based services together for a range of health practitioners. A brief fax referral form is completed (including patient's signed consent) which is then faxed directly to the provincial quitline by the health care provider. Your provincial quitline does the rest! Click for information on the Fax Referral Program in your province.
