The 13 CIHR Institutes have identified research training as a key cross-cutting, strategic priority for CIHR.
CIHR wishes to encourage interdisciplinary, integrative health research, in part through the training of the next generation of researchers. In the context of a soon to be announced CIHR Strategic Initiative in Health Research Training, CIHR will be introducing a new funding mechanism, the CIHR Training Program Grant.
About the CIHR Training Program Grant
A CIHR Training Program will consist of a group of excellent mentors, accomplished in health research, who work collaboratively to offer a research training program of defined format and content to a group of trainees. Programs will be recognised nationally for:
The research excellence of the mentors, and their record of success in training health researchers.
The transdisciplinary approach of the training program.
Innovative and effective approaches to the training experience, which are advantageous to successful trainees when they enter the health research workforce in Canada.
Anticipated program flexibility:
Training programs may involve mentors in more than one institution.
Training programs need not be restricted to formally approved graduate programs and could include research training of post-doctoral fellows, health professionals or researchers at any stage in their careers, or a mixture of the above.
Anticipated allowable costs:
Trainee stipends and travel
Program development and coordination
Curriculum development and dissemination
Advertising and trainee recruitment costs
