The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canada's major agency for health research, invites applications from teams of investigators in universities and affiliated organizations, institutions, agencies and hospitals for the support of training programs. One of CIHR's core objectives is to provide leadership in building capacity within Canada's health research community through the training and development of researchers, and fostering the development and ongoing support of the scientific careers of women and men in health research. Together with our partners in government, voluntary and private sectors, CIHR wishes to encourage transdisciplinary , integrative health research, in part through the training of the next generation of researchers, and to increase the capacity of Canada`s health research enterprise to address important research questions in all areas of health research, including biomedical research, clinical research, research respecting health systems, health services, the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health.

We are in the midst of a profound revolution in health research, a revolution characterized by the convergence of mathematics, the physical sciences, social sciences and humanities, together with biological, behavioural and clinical approaches to answer important questions in health and disease. Accordingly, there is a growing demand for highly skilled and adaptable individuals who can embrace a diversity of approaches in solving complex problems and in applying solutions.

It has been predicted that 100 000 new researchers and scientists will be required by 2010 in Canada alone. There will be fierce international competition for this research talent.

Innovation and excellence in the next generation of health research training programs is key to attracting the best and brightest creative minds to Canadian health research.
