2nd Call for Applications to the New Investigators Network - II - The New Investigators Network (NIN) is a multi-disciplinary, pan-Canadian group of committed, enthusiastic and talented researchers who are dedicated to conducting research on child and youth development. The investigators have developed the skills for using complex statistical techniques in the analysis of large-scale national and international data bases, and translating the findings of the research into social policy aimed at reducing inequalities and improving the cognitive, behaviour and health outcomes of children and youth. The NIN is managed by the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy at the University of New Brunswick (UNB-CRISP) under the direction of Professor Douglas Willms. UNB-CRISP is inviting applications for a new cohort of new investigators who are dedicated to the study of children's learning, behavioural, and health outcomes. Deadline for applications is November 17th, 2006. They will select the new cohort of scholars during the spring of 2007. The first national meeting will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick in October 2007.
Going Global Science and Technology Fund - The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has received Treasury Board's approval to extend its Going Global S&T Fund for a two fiscal year period - October 2006 to March 31 2008. The Going Global S&T Fund provides assistance to Canadian researchers from universities, private companies and non-government research centres with the goal to foster and build targeted research relations between Canadians and international partners. Eligible expenses include travel, accommodation, meals, incidentals and other non-research expenses. Please see the Going Global Science and Technology Fund for the program overview, eligibility criteria and the financial assistance that is available within the new Going Global program. Also note that applications must be submitted six weeks in advance of the commencement of the project.

CIHI: 87% increase in hip and knee replacements in Canada - CIHI's data show that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to require joint replacements in Canada. In 2004-2005, 9 out of 10 knee replacement patients were either overweight or obese, compared to nearly 8 out of 10 hip replacement patients.
KRESCENT Program - The Kidney Foundation of Canada, The Canadian Society of Nephrology, the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes, and the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health are proud to announce the launch of the 3rd year of the Kidney Research Scientist Core Education and National Training (KRESCENT) program. They are currently inviting applications for the 2007 KRESCENT Competition for Post-Doctoral Fellowships, Doctoral Scholarships for Allied Health professionals and New Investigator Awards. Up-date: IPPH Request for Applications - Chair: Public Health - Please note that IPPH and PHAC are pleased to welcome a new partner, the Centre de recherche en prévention de l'obésité in offering the Applied Chairs in Public Health funding opportunity. The purpose of the RFA is to strengthen population-level and community-level policy and program intervention research, mentoring and education capacity by supporting public health faculty in Canada. It is expected that this targeted investment will lead to increased national capacity for effective research, mentoring, education, knowledge translation and application of research evidence of relevance to the public health system.

Best Practices for the Prevention of Overweight and Obesity in Children: A Focus on Immigrants New to Industrialized Countries - Health Canada's Health Policy Research Program (HPRP) was created in 2001 to increase the quantity of academic research that is directly relevant to current and future health policy issues. The Program supports primary, secondary, synthesis research, or a policy research workshop. The Research Management and Dissemination Division (RMDD) of the Applied Research and Analysis Directorate (ARAD) releases Executive Summaries of the HPRP research results as they become available.
Forecasting Obesity to 2010 - A report titled "Forecasting obesity to 2010", prepared for the UK Department of Health, is now available online. The purpose of the report was to forecast what levels of obesity in England could be in 2010 if current trends continue unchanged. The report looks at the current picture of overweight and obesity prevalence among children and adults, using data from the Health Survey for England 2003, and uses the data to project discernible trends. It also examines the estimated number and proportion of adults and children who may be obese in 2010 within different socio-demographic groups.
