Office of Nursing Services

The Office of Nursing Services (ONS) plays a vital role in the delivery of health nursing services to all Aboriginal communities in Canada , by offering employment and learning opportunities to the women and men who deliver these services and by providing financial support to communities that have demonstrated the capacity to manage these services themselves.

As the focal point for the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) activities relating to the nursing community and the clients it serves, ONS is responsible for:

  • Supporting FNIHB regional offices in providing nursing services;
  • Ensuring nursing practice standards and competency requirements are upheld;
  • Recruiting, managing and retaining community health nurses;
  • Providing professional learning opportunities for nurses and training for newly recruited nurses;
  • Analyzing health trends and issues and providing leadership on nursing services; and
  • Helping set policies and standards and monitoring the system to measure progress against objectives.

Through ONS, nurses in First Nations and Inuit Communities in Canada are supported by a variety of FNIHB programs dealing with everything from diabetes treatment and prevention, to pre-natal care and healthy living. ONS also works in close collaboration with other FNIHB professionals specializing in areas such as community medicine, addiction and early childhood development.
