National Dosimetry Services
Since 1951, National Dosimetry Services (NDS) has been providing personal, lifelong, occupational monitoring for ionizing radiation to Canadians everywhere.
NDS is a totally self sufficient, cost recovery, Canadian business within the Radiation Protection Bureau (RPB) of Health Canada. NDS is licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) under Regulatory Standard S-106: "Technical and Quality Assurance Standards for Dosimetry Services in Canada".
Dosimetry services are available for measuring personal, occupational exposures to x-ray, gamma, neutron and beta radiation. Dosimeters, consisting of plaques enclosed in special holders, or ring dosimeters, are used for specific "wearing periods", depending upon the service to which the user subscribes.
Services offered by NDS are:
- whole body and extremity thermoluminescent dosimetry services (TLD)
- neutron dosimetry services
- dosimetry for uranium miners
- electronic personal dosimeters (EPDs)
