Guidelines for Completion - CIHR Training Module

For your convenience, please print these Guidelines.

The following are guidelines for completing the CIHR Training Module. The guidelines are broken down section by section, organized in the same manner and in the same order as the fields on the CIHR Web forms.

Before completing the Training Module using the section by section instructions found below, it is imperative that you become familiar with the steps outlined on the How to Apply for Funding page, which provides an overview of how to apply to CIHR for funding.

Guidelines for Completing the Training Module

The following guidelines are broken down by section in the order that they are presented on the Training Module screens on the CIHR Web forms website. You should provide clear and concise answers to all applicable questions, noting that some data requirements are program-specific.

All the information provided may be revised in the subsequent full application, if applicable, with the exception of the name of the candidate and the project title.

1. Program(s)

"Program(s)" checkboxes

Check the box for the opportunity for which you are seeking support.

Strategic Initiative/RFA

If you wish to apply to a Request for Applications, enter the name as it appears in the Current Funding Opportunities section of the CIHR website.

Industrial Partner(s)

If you wish to apply to an Industry-Partnered funding opportunity, enter the name of the industrial partner(s).

Partnership Program

If you wish to apply to a Partnership funding opportunity, enter the name of the opportunity.

Special Program

If you wish to apply to a special funding opportunity, enter the name of the opportunity.

Competition Date

Enter the competition deadline date for the opportunity to which you are applying. If you are applying to a regular funding opportunity, consult the opportunity's Application Package. If you are applying to an occasional funding opportunity, refer to the "How to Apply" section in the description of the funding opportunity.

Proposed CIHR Start Date

CIHR appreciates the uncertainty in predicting the start date of an awardfar in advance, but you should provide your best estimate.

Applicant Consent Form

Submit one completed and signed Applicant Consent form at both the registration and application stages.

2. Candidate

Citizenship

If you are a foreign candidate who is not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you are required to have your proposed supervisor write a separate supporting letter giving an assessment of your candidacy.

If you are a permanent resident, include a copy of the official document. If this document is not received, CIHR will consider you a foreign candidate who must meet the following criteria: a) your proposed training program must be held in Canada and b) you must provide an additional letter of support written by the proposed supervisor.

Note: Proof of your citizenship or permanent residency is now required.  A copy of the official documentation will be accepted.

3. Project

Lay Title of Research

Provide a title for your project that is accessible to a lay audience. Lay titles are used by CIHR to inform the public and Parliament about the valuable research supported through public funds.

Abstract

Describe your project in a way that is accessible to a lay audience. Be sure to indicate how your proposed research can improve personal health, the health of populations and / or the health delivery system. This information is used by CIHR to inform the public and Parliament about the valuable research supported through public funds.

Period of Support Requested

Normally, the period of support requested is in complete years. You may request additional  months if your projects will require a partial year of support in the final year.

Institution which will administer project funds

Indicate the name of the institution that will be responsible for the provision of space, facilities, furniture and general services required for the conduct of the research project.

Descriptors

Provide keywords to describe your research project, the techniques and the methodologies it will employ, and the areas of interest.

Proposed Supervisor(s)

Awards for research training are tenable under the supervision of individuals holding an independent research appointment in areas of investigation where it is clear that the research has direct relevance to health. You may propose a maximum of two supervisors on a single training award application and you must provide a validated Common CV for both.

CIHR is willing to consider applications from trainees wishing to train with an investigator who does not hold an academic appointment. The proposed supervisor should first write to CIHR giving a brief outline of the training program, indicating the research facilities available and naming the institution through which the funds would be administered. Questions of eligibility must be resolved before the application deadline date.

4. General Information

Areas of Research

Select the areas of research that best describe your proposal from the list provided.

Classification Codes

Select the classification codes that best describe your proposal from the list provided.

Suggested CIHR Institutes

Select a primary CIHR Institute whose research mandate is related to the application's research area(s) and objective(s). Additional Institutes should only be selected if the substance of this award application significantly overlaps with the research mandate of more than one Institute.

Themes

Select a primary theme classification. Indicate additional theme classifications only if the substance of the award application significantly overlaps more than one theme. Consult the definition of the four CIHR Themes on CIHR web site for more information.

Certification Requirements

If you are offered an award, the necessary certification requirements must be met in accordance with policies on ethical conduct of research.

10. Appendices

The section "Appendix - Following Documents" is a checklist of supporting documents required depending on the program applied for. No other supporting documents will be accepted. Reviewers will be instructed to disregard any additional material. Please include this page and check each box once to state that the supporting documents have been included with the application.

In the section "Appendix - List of Individuals",list the names of individuals that will provide letters to accompany the application.

11. Instructions regarding signatures

CIHR requires original signatures on the application. On page 1 of the printed version of the Training Module, the signature of the candidate, the primary supervisor and the co-supervisor and the Head of the Department at the proposed training location is required.  If the proposed supervisor is normally the signing authority for the faculty/department, another senior official must sign instead.

12. Instructions regarding the acknowledgement page on the Training Module printed report

The acknowledgement page is automatically populated with information that applicants enter into the Training Module web form. The name and mailing address of the Nominated Principal Applicant/Candidate should be entered in the text box "Acknowledgement to be sent to:", which can be found in the "General Information" section of the Training Module web form. Only one acknowledgment will be sent to the Nominated Principal Applicant/Candidate per application, and is normally sent two weeks after the application deadline date.

For Industry-Partnered funding opportunities, an acknowledgment will be sent both to the Nominated Principal Applicant/Candidate, and to the industrial partner(s), unless specifically requested otherwise. Submit one acknowledgement page per industrial partner.
