NOTICE TO THE MEDIA Saturday, December 9, 2006

The annual meeting of federal/provincial/territorial health ministers will take place on Saturday, December 9, at the Pavilion Adrien-J.-Cormier, Université de Moncton. Health Minister Michael Murphy and federal Health Minister Tony Clement will co-chair the meeting.

Media must be accredited to have access to this event. Registration for media will be held in the Centre Etudiants at the University of Moncton beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8. Work space for media is available at the Centre Etudiants.

NOTICE TO THE MEDIA Friday October 20, 2006

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, in collaboration with the Government of Quebec and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women (CRI-VIFF), are organizing a round-table discussion on violence against women with the participation of Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden. The event will be held in Montreal on October 25, 2006. The round-table discussion is an integral part of the official programme for Her Majesty's State visit to Canada.

Experts from Sweden, the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec, CRI-VIFF and organizations in Quebec involved in the field will take part in the discussions. This round-table will provide an opportunity to discuss the respective approaches on the subject, the ultimate goal of which is to eliminate violence against women.

Both co-chairs of the round-table, Dr. David Butler-Jones, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer and Deputy Head of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Ms. Maryse Rinfret-Raynor, Provost and Vice-Rector, Academic Affairs, at the Université de Montréal, as well as Her Majesty Queen Silvia, will answer questions from the media following the event.

Health Canada today released the October issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN). This edition features an article on a potential chronic inflamation related to use of the surgical adhesive BioGlue, and a case presentation on a suspected association of atomoxetine (Strattera) with tics.

Other topics covered in this issue include a new tool for reporting adverse reactions to health products, and the extension of a continuing education course with the Canadian Medical Association to improve physician reporting of adverse drug reactions. The newsletter also contains a quarterly summary of health professional and consumer advisories.

The Trans Fat Task Force, co-chaired by Health Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, will release its final report June 28, 2006.

The Trans Fat Task Force was mandated by the Minister of Health to provide guidance on how to reduce the trans fat content of foods sold in Canada.

Co-chairs Mary L'Abbé and Sally Brown will present their final report and answer questions on the findings of the Task Force. The event will be hosted by the Honourable Senator Keon.

Drugs, food, and natural health products have beneficial health effects. However, certain combinations of these products taken together can have unintended adverse consequences.

Health Canada is hosting a major international symposium on the interactions between drugs, food, and natural health products. The department is bringing together experts from around the world in this first-of-its-kind symposium.

The goals of the Symposium are to increase awareness of potential drug/food/natural health product interactions, and to support further research on this issue.
