Jeffery NiskerJeffrey Nisker MD, PhD, FRCSC

Professor of Obstetrics-Gynaecology
University of Western Ontario

Jeff is a Professor of Obstetrics-Gynaecology and Oncology and Coordinator of Medical Ethics and Humanities in the Schulich School Medicine, University of Western Ontario. His research interests centre on the use of theatre as a public engagement tool for health-policy development, particularly regarding genetic technology. Jeff has written many scientific articles and book chapters as well as six plays and many short stories to surface issues of ethics and professionalism, and encourage compassion in health care. His plays have been performed throughout Canada, the United States and South Africa. His national positions have included: co-chair Health Canada's Advisory Committee on Reproductive and Genetic Technology, Executive Canadian Bioethics Society, Editor-in-Chief Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Canada, National Council of Ethics in Human Research, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons' Ethics and Equity Committee and Health and Public Policy Committee (Working Group on Standards of Clinical Investigation). Jeff did his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Toronto, and his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at U.W.O. He was awarded a Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship in hormones and cancer and did post-doctoral training at U.W.O., University of California, and McMaster University. Jeff holds Canadian Institute of Health Research grants to investigate public engagement in health policy development and issues related to genetics and reproductive medicine. Jeff received his PhD in Ethics from the University of Toronto. Jeff has received many teaching awards including the first Canadian Association of Medical Educators Award of Merit, the U.W.O. Students' Council Award of Excellence presented to the professors with the highest student-determined faculty evaluation scores, and the Douglas Bocking Award presented to the U.W.O. "member of Faculty who, in the opinion of medical students has made the most outstanding contribution to their medical education during the previous four years." Jeff was awarded the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecology of Canada President's Award for the most significant contribution to obstetrics and gynaecology in Canada. He was chosen by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Peter Gzowski as one of the 13 "Best Minds of Our Time."
