The Clinician Scientist - A Treasured Entity

On behalf of Dr. Alan Bernstein and everyone at CIHR, and in recognition of the importance of strengthening the clinician scientist fabric in Canada, the CIHR Clinician Scientist Working Group invites input from the community with regards to immediate and long -term approaches. Since August 2001, a set of plausible actions to bring clinician scientist training and maintenance to a state of international leadership has been sought from the constituency of health research and health care in Canada.

The recommendations that came out of this consultative process are captured in the discussion paper, The Clinician Scientist: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, A Story Told and Recommendations from Canadian Researchers [ HTMLPDF | Help ], and in the context of an accompanying survey.

At this point, we would welcome further feedback from the entire community about the value of each recommendation put forth to date and further assistance in identifying meritorious recommendations to act on. The feedback can be best given through responses to the paper captured in the survey now posted. Based on your feedback, we anticipate finalizing the paper for publication by spring 2002. Moreover, your response and on-going participation will be vital to the development of a strategy by CIHR and other organizations and agencies to address the concerns unique to or especially related to clinician scientists.

Please take the time to read the discussion paper and complete the survey. The survey takes approximately 20-25 minutes to complete. Your responses will be kept confidential and will greatly assist CIHR and its partner agencies and organizations in developing a strategy for dealing effectively with the clinician scientist issue in the coming years.

The paper includes observations and ideas from individuals in numerous walks of scientific discovery, and as such, not all recommendations are coherent in the paper, nor are all recommendations a reflection of the views of CIHR as an organization. However, in order for fullest consideration of topics to be made, we are including all plausible recommendations and ideas for further national discussion.
