Institute of Aging (IA)

Institute of Aging e-newsletter August 2002

1. Cachexia Anorexia Syndrome researchers looking for input before September

As weight loss is a common occurrence in elderly persons, three researchers, funded by the CIHR Institute of Cancer, are asking for your input for a needs, gaps and opportunities assessment for research on cachexia anorexia syndrome. By completing a survey before the end of August at http://elcomconsulting.brinkster.net, you may help researchers gain information about interest in anorexia-cachexia and malnutrition in the elderly, regardless of underlying disease. Your input may also help to identify common barriers faced by professionals in this field. The results of the survey are expected to assist in the design of related funding models.

2. Study protocol for CLSA launched

The Steering Committee of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) has recently approved a recommendation from an international review board to fund a consortium which will develop the study protocol. Susan Kirkland of Dalhousie University, Parminder Raina of McMaster University, and Christina Wolfson of McGill University will lead the group in collaboration with more than 150 researchers across Canada.

The study protocol is expected to be also reviewed by another international review board late in 2003, and research is slated to begin in 2004. CLSA is expected to provide in depth data that can be translated into health care policies and practices in Canada, as well as exceptional scientific information on aging. The study has been identified by CIHR as one of several major crosscutting strategic initiatives.

3. Canadian Research Forum on Aging

The Institute is supporting the Canadian Research Forum on Aging, to take place during the joint meeting of the Canadian Association of Gerontology and the Canadian Geriatric Society in October 2002 in Montreal. The forum will include a keynote speaker (Tom Perls), two symposia (Healthy Aging: from Genes to Society, and Cognitive Impairment: The Full Spectrum), a student poster session, and a grant craft session for students and new investigators.

4. Institute of Aging develops e-newsletter policy

The objective of the Institute of Aging e-newsletter is to deliver, in a timely fashion, only news items that have a direct relevance to research on aging. If you believe that an item is not relevant, please let us know. Your comments could help us make decisions on future news items.

The Institute of Aging will never sell or give your e-mail address to third parties for any reason. However, if you would like to opt out of future mailings of this e-newsletter, send us an e-mail with the subject title "Remove" and your name will be removed from the listserv. Again, any comments that you provide may help us improve this service.

Any submissions intended for this e-newsletter should be provided directly to the Institute's communications staff person (charles.santerre@usherbrooke.ca), several weeks in advance of any event or deadline, in both official languages if possible. The Institute reserves the right to edit submissions for length and clarity.
