Institute of Aging (IA)

Institute of Aging e-newsletter July 2002

1. Priority Announcements through CIHR's Open Competitions: Additional Opportunities for Support

To support health research in its strategic areas, the Institute is making additional opportunities of support available this fall for applications submitted to the following CIHR open competitions: Operating Grants, Doctoral Research Awards, Fellowships, Senior Research Fellowships, Clinician Scientists, New Investigators, Investigators, and Senior and Distinguished Investigators. The Institute will fund meritorious applications targeting its priorities that are under the CIHR funding threshold. More information on this program and other funding opportunities can be found on the CIHR website

2. Four additional Fellowship awards announced

The Institute of Aging provides support for highly qualified candidates completing postdoctoral training. Four additional Fellowship awardees from last spring's competition have recently been announced: Slimane Belbraouet, Sophie Chesneau, Kelly Fallon, and Doris Howell (co-funded by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation).

3. Rural Health RFA related to aging

The Institute of Aging is participating in the new RFA entitled "Building Healthy Communities through Rural and Northern Health Research", for which a maximum of $100,000 is available for projects lasting up to one year. The goal of this strategic initiative is to foster research on understanding and enhancing health, and health services and policy, in small and remote communities around three key research themes, the first of which is related to aging. For more information please consult the CIHR website

4. New Peer Committees on Aging to be in place this fall

Two new peer review committees dedicated to research on aging will accept applications for the Sept. 15 competition: More information on the mandates of BCA- Biological and Clinical Aspects of Aging (committee no. 2) and SDA- Social Dimensions in Aging (committee no. 41) can be found at the CIHR website

You are strongly invited to submit your grant proposal to these committees. The Institute will also ensure that experts in aging are sitting on the other panels relevant to aging.

5. Pilot Project Grants

Sept. 01 is the deadline for letters of intent to apply to the Pilot Project Grants. Open to established researchers, this grant can provide $50,000 for one year to test an innovative idea within IA's established priority areas. A total of 12 grants, which are expected to be judged by the two new peer review committees on aging, may be financed in this competition. More information available on the CIHR website

6. Highlights of the 7th IAB meeting in North Hatley
