4. New Emerging Team Grants and Strategic Training Program: 21 teams to receive funding to prepare a full proposal

The Institute of Aging recently completed the review of letters of intent for the New Emerging Team (NET) Program and the Strategic Training Program. A total of 16 NET's (11 in aging and five in cognitive impairment), as well as five teams from the Strategic Training Program (two on aging and three related to cognitive impairment on aging) were selected. All 21 teams are receiving a development grant of 5 000$ to help with the preparation of a full proposal that is due January 8, 2003. All teams from both programs will be evaluated by a peer review committee put in place specifically for multidisciplinary research projects on aging.

5. New Peer Review Committees on Aging receive 95 applications!

The scientific community has responded favourably to the creation of the new peer review committees on aging. BCA - Biological and Clinical Aspects of Aging will review more than 35 grant applications from the open competition in September, and more than 20 requests for Pilot Projects. SDA- Social Dimensions in Aging will review more than 40 applications in total - 20 grant applications and 20 requests for pilot projects.

6. 50 participate in the Canadian Mobility Consensus Workshop

In collaboration with other CIHR institutes, the Institute of Aging financially supported and participated in a mobility consensus workshop recently held in Toronto. Participants varied from researchers in the field, to consumers, as well as representatives from CIHR, government and industry. The workshop helped define needs in the field of mobility and research directions. CIHR funding opportunities and the development of request for proposals specifically related to mobility were also discussed.

7. Annual Report

The Institute's annual report for 2001-2002 was printed at the end of September and will soon be available on the website. Information regarding which researchers, fields and activities the Institute supported during the year, and for how much, as well as broad directions to be followed in the future can be found in the report. Paper copies can be requested by sending an e-mail to sylvie.delafontaine@usherbrooke.ca

8. International francophone gerontology conference in Brussels

Sometimes we meet our neighbours halfway around the world. The Institute of Aging had the opportunity to introduce itself to several Canadian researchers who were on hand at the VIIe Congrès International Francophone de Gérontologie, in Brussels, Belgium, in September. Many of those researchers took the opportunity to obtain copies of the Institute's list of grant offerings, strategic and action plans, as well as subscribe to the free e-newsletter, as did several of their international counterparts who we welcome to our growing family of readers world-wide.
