Request for Applications

Associated Medical Services Inc.
and the
Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health of the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Associated Medical Services Inc. (AMS) is a Canadian research granting organization that offers competitive grant and award opportunities in three programs: Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine, Bioethics, and Education. The AMS mission is to facilitate education, research and other initiatives that promote the development and understanding of those human and social values that are fundamental to health.

The Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health (IAPH) supports research to address the special health needs of Canada's Aboriginal people. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is Canada's premier federal agency for health research. The CIHR objective is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system.

Research Area
AMS and the IAPH/CIHR are pleased to announce a joint partnership to support Senior Research Fellows who are undertaking research in the history of aboriginal health, disease, and medicine, broadly defined.

Eligibility
The program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Candidates must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) and at least two and no more than five years of post-doctoral research training, and not hold a tenure track academic appointment. The awards must be held in Canada. Candidates holding only a health professional degree, e.g., MD, are not eligible.

Please note that the general CIHR Senior Research Fellowship guidelines apply, except as noted in this Request for Applications

Funding
The maximum period of support is 4 years and will be based on peer review recommendations.

The value of the awards will be in accordance with the CIHR Senior Research Fellowship Guidelines. Research and travel allowances are provided.

The program has two phases: Phase 1 (Training) provides a stipend of $44,500 per annum for up to two years of support and a research and travel allowance of $10,000. Phase 2 provides a contribution to the salary of the recipient of $50,000 per annum for two years plus a research allowance of $40,000 per annum and fringe benefits.

For an award co-funded by AMS and IAPH, CIHR will require the University, as part of the phase 2 application process, to make a written commitment to provide financial support of $15,000 per annum towards the cost of the Award recipient's salary and research allowance.

The awards are not renewable. If, at any time during the tenure of the award, the supervisor feels that the progress of the Award recipient is not satisfactory, AMS and the IAPH/CIHR must be notified immediately in writing.

It is a condition of the Award that Award recipients submit an annual progress report to AMS and the IAPH/CIHR.
