1. CIHR Expenditures

CIHR's expenditures have increase by approximately 130% from 1999-2000 to 2004-2005. CIHR invested a total $275M in Grants and Awards and $14M in Operating in 1999-2000 compared to a total a total $619M in Grants and Awards and $46M in Operating in 2004-2005.

2. CIHR Funding of Programs: Open and Strategic

CIHR invests in various programs to foster and strengthen excellent health research. CIHR funds open competitions, which are investigator-initiated projects in all areas of health research, and strategic initiatives, which respond to the strategic health priorities of Canadians. CIHR has aimed to commit approximately 70% of its budget to open competitions and 30% to Strategic Initiatives. In 2004-2005, CIHR invested approximately 71% of its budget into Open Competitions and 29% into Strategic Initiatives.

3. CIHR Funding of Programs: Grants and Awards

Since 1999-2000, CIHR has significantly increased its funding to various programs. In the span of 6 years, CIHR's grants and awards funding --which includes Open Competition Operating Grants, Salary Programs, Training Programs, and All Other Grants-- has increased by 125% from $276M in 1999-2000 to $619M in 2004-2005. In addition to this, Partner Contributions have increased by 69%, from $52M in 1999-2000 to $88M in 2004-2005. Partners include: universities, teaching hospitals, voluntary health sector, governments, agencies, community groups, private sector, and international agencies.

4. CIHR Funding by Research Theme

CIHR categorizes health research in four themes: bio-medical research; clinical research; research respecting health systems and services; and research into the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health, and environmental influences on health.

Since 1999-2000, CIHR has considerably increased its funding. CIHR's funding to "biomedical" theme has increased by 86%, funding to "Clinical" theme has increased by 147%, funding to "Health Services" theme has increased by 2000%, and funding to "Population Health" theme has increased by 822%.
