Standard and Specification Identification

Several elements are included in the numerical designation of a standard or specification. For instance, the designation numbers CAN/CGSB-51.71-2005, 22-GP-15M, and 44.160a contain the following elements:

  • CAN/CGSB indicates the document is a CGSB National Standard of Canada;
  • 51, 22 and 44 represent different subject areas;
  • 71, 15 and 160 represent individual standards within those subject areas;
  • •  2005 indicated the year of the latest edition;
  • “a” indicates a first revision (“b” would indicate a second revision, “c” a third, etc.).
Some standards and specifications published before January 1, 1992, show an “M” before the year of the latest edition. This indicates that the standard was written using metric (SI) units. Documents published after January 1, 1992 do not include the “M” because they all use metric units.

The letter “P” indicates a provisional standard.
