Standard and Specification Identification
Several elements are included in the numerical designation of a standard or specification.
For instance, the designation numbers CAN/CGSB-51.71-2005, 22-GP-15M, and 44.160a contain
the following elements:
- CAN/CGSB indicates the document is a CGSB National Standard of Canada;
- 51, 22 and 44 represent different subject areas;
- 71, 15 and 160 represent individual standards within those subject areas;
- 2005 indicated the year of the latest edition;
- “a” indicates a first revision (“b” would indicate a second revision, “c” a third, etc.).
Some standards and specifications published before January 1, 1992, show an “M” before the year of the latest edition. This indicates that the standard was written using metric (SI) units. Documents published after January 1, 1992 do not include the “M” because they all use metric units.
The letter “P” indicates a provisional standard.
Other Important Terms
Adopted standard: An ISO standard adopted by a CGSB standards committee and published under CGSB cover bearing the designations of the CGSB and of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with permission of the copyright holder.
It should be noted that the preface contains any variations required for use in Canada.
An example of an adopted standard is CAN/CGSB-4.2 No. 18.3-97 which is also ISO 105-B02:1994.
Endorsed standard: An adopted standard that is approved by a CGSB standards committee as acceptable for use in Canada, but which is not reproduced or reprinted under CGSB cover.
Extended standard: An existing standard determined through canvass of committee members and possibly other interested parties, to be technically valid, requiring no changes. Standards are no longer extended.
Reaffirmation of standards: The verification that an existing standard is valid, without revision, until the next regular review.
Time-dated standards: A standard that has passed the systematic review date, usually five-year. The date of document publication (including reaffirmations and extensions or the most recent technical amendment to the standard, whichever is later) determines the time-dated status.
