Canadian Health Research Awards

Each year, CIHR celebrates outstanding contribution, commitment, innovation, and achievement in the field of health research through seven prestigious awards. These awards include some of the highest honours the research community bestows upon its peers and recognize community leadership and collaboration in advancing new knowledge.

From dedicated health researchers vigorously pursuing new knowledge, to community leaders championing innovation and collaboration, recipients of these awards are exceptional people and organizations whose efforts are making a difference to Canada and to the world. Their sustained excellence greatly contributes to discovery and achievement that improves the health of Canadians and our health care system, and ensures Canada's continued prosperity as a nation.

Recipients of these awards are recognized at a special evening Canadian Health Research Awards - A Celebration of Excellence.

The awards are:

The CIHR Michael Smith Prize in Health Research: Canada's Health Researcher of the Year is awarded annually to an outstanding Canadian researcher who has demonstrated a high degree of innovation, creativity, leadership and dedication in health research.

The CIHR Distinguished Leadership Award: 2006 Champion of Health Research recognizes the outstanding efforts of individuals who, through leadership, vision and commitment, have made a significant contribution to Canada's health research enterprise.

The CIHR Partnership Award recognizes partnerships that exemplify excellence by bringing health research communities together.

The CIHR Knowledge Translation Awards honours and supports teams or organizations that make an outstanding contribution to the health of Canadians or to the health system through exemplary knowledge translation.

The CIHR Douglas Kinsella Doctoral Award for Research in Bioethics is offered to the highest ranking individual applying to the doctoral research programs whose research focuses on ethical issues related to health and/or health research.

The Peter Lougheed/CIHR New Investigator Award: Canada's Premier Young Researcher is awarded to Canada's brightest young researchers at the beginning of their careers. It is CIHR's most important career development award.

The CIHR Jean-François St-Denis Fellowship in Cancer Research recognizes an outstanding individual who intends to undertake postdoctoral training in the field of cancer research.
