Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH)

Summary of Results from the 2006 YI Forum Evaluation Survey

Background
The National Research Forum for Young Investigators in Circulatory and Respiratory Health is a major training and educational initiative of the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) and its many partners.  To date, ICRH has sponsored three YI Forums.  Each has been co-organized with the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manitoba.  We wish to expand on the successes of the past YI Forums.  In doing so, we circulated a survey at this year's Forum which was organized in two parts. Part A focussed on determining the quality of the participant's experience and Part B focussed on determining the future of the event.

Participation
The 2006 YI Forum had approximately 350 individuals in attendance.  Of 350, there were approximately 280 individuals who attended the awards banquet and closing ceremonies dinner.  The YI Evaluation Survey was administered at that dinner and we received a total of 134 responses.

Past Participation
The attendance rate has declined since the first YI Forum in 2004 where over 500 participants attended. In the second year (2005), the YI Forum saw approximately 450 attendees and 350 in 2006.  Forty percent of this year's attendance (53 respondents) indicated that they had attended the Forum at least once previously, while 61% (82 respondents) were attending the Forum for the first time and 35% were returning from 2005.

Quality of 2006 YI Forum
The 2006 YI Forum had three overall objectives:

1) To celebrate and promote Canadian trainees and young investigators in the circulatory and respiratory research community including heart, lung, blood, sleep, critical and intensive care, and population health research.
2) To facilitate interaction, learning, sharing of knowledge and collaboration among trainees and researchers in the circulatory and respiratory community.

3) To promote mutual respect and appreciation among researchers working in diverse disciplines and across research themes.

The majority of respondents feel that the YI Forum met its objectives. In addition, respondents were asked to rate the quality of YI Forum program components (e.g., quality of the workshops, science/contents, speakers, communications, logistics; conference facilities, etc.). Overall, the respondents were very satisfied.

Future Participation
Seventy five percent (75%) of the respondents indicated that they plan to attend the YI Forum in the future.  Although the respondents plan to return, it should be noted only 50% plan to attend every year.

Future of the YI Forum
The majority (60%) of respondents would like to see the Forum over a 2-3 day span and 55- 65% indicated that they prefer the YI Forum to continue to be held towards the end of the week (Thursday, Friday & Saturday).  With respect to the location of the YI Forum, the majority of respondents (67%) indicated that they would prefer a change in venue from year to year.

Competition
Fifty two percent (52%) of respondents deemed the competition aspect of the YI Forum as important and another 20% believed it to be very important.

Future Concerns
While the 2006 YI Forum was generally seen as a successful event, ICRH and its partners will need to address why the attendance has been on a decline and determine the direction for the next YI Forum.

Conclusion
The 2006 YI Forum Evaluation Survey provided ICRH and its partners with some insights from those who attended.  We would also like to learn what other members of our community anticipate from such an event.  An online survey will be available soon to gather input into the development of the next Forum.
