Official Design Unveiled

Design UnveiledOn June 23, 2003, the Honourable Wayne Easter, Solicitor General of Canada, on behalf of Ralph Goodale, Minister for Public Works and Government Services Canada, unveiled the design for the Charlottetown Government of Canada building.

The new building, which is expected to open in the Summer 2007 will be the most environmentally friendly building that Public Works and Government Services Canada has ever built.

The building will showcase a number of innovative technologies including solar heating, a grass roof and cooling systems that will cut down on energy use. The new facility will also demonstrate how government is leading the way in building design and construction.

Also in attendance at the unveiling were Shawn Murphy and Joe McGuire, local Members of Parliament, as well as George MacDonald, Mayor of Charlottetown and members of the Community Liaison Committee.

Located on University Avenue and the corners of Fitzroy and Euston Streets, the new building will replace the Dominion Building on Queen Street. More than 400 federal employees will work in the new facility with the major tenant being Veteran's Affairs Canada. However, a number of smaller tenants will also be located in this new state-of-art facility.
