Summary | |
Part of mandate of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research is to promote research that addresses the reduction of the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatment, psycho-social support systems, and palliation. The purpose of this Priority Announcement is to further strengthen Canadian cancer research by offering short-term funding to those researchers who submit excellent operating grant applications, but are not funded due to CIHR's financial constraints. It is expected that this targeted investment will prevent cancer research teams from disbanding prematurely and lead to successful applications in future competitions. |

Relevant Research Areas
Through this funding opportunity, the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research will strengthen research that relates to its mandate.
Upon completion of peer review, the Institute of Cancer Research will receive the ranking lists and peer review committee recommendations on funding level and grant or award term for all applications 1) that are rated within the CIHR fundable range but are not funded through the regular CIHR competition to which they were submitted; and 2) in which Institute of Cancer Research was selected as primary choice in the "Suggested CIHR Institute(s)" section of the Research Module (see "How to Apply"). These applications will be funded from the top down in order of ranking as far as budgets will allow. Applications that receive a rating below 3.5 will not be funded.
The decision to fund research applications based on their relevance to the mandate occurs apart from the peer review (scientific review) and has no relationship to the results of peer review. Peer review committees will not be informed of applications submitted for funding through this announcement.
Eligibility criteria for all CIHR research funding programs apply. The business office of the institution of an eligible Nominated Principal Applicant generally administers CIHR funds. Please refer to the Eligibility Requirements for CIHR Grants and Awards regarding the eligibility requirements for individuals and institutions.
A CIHR peer review committee will evaluate the full applications. The peer review committee members are selected based on suggestions from many sources including the Institute(s) / portfolio(s) and partner(s), following CIHR's Policy on Confidentiality, Conflict of Interest and Privacy Issues in Peer and Relevance Review (CCIP). For information on CIHR's peer review process in general, see Peer Review.
This Priority Announcement will follow the CIHR General Grants and Awards Policies. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate the use of gender and sex-based analysis in applications.
All conditions specified in CIHR General Grants and Awards Policies shall apply to applications funded through this Priority Announcement. Conditions cover areas such as Applicant and Institutional Responsibilities, Ethics, Official language policy, Access to Information and Privacy Acts, and Acknowledgement of CIHR Support. Successful applicants will be informed of any special financial conditions prior to the release of funds or when they receive CIHR's Authorization for Funding (AFF) document.
