National Forum on Health, 1994 to 1997

The National Forum on Health was announced in October 1994 by then Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien. The Forum’s purpose was to:

... involve and inform Canadians and to advise the federal government on innovative ways to improve our health system and the health of Canada’s people.

The Prime Minister chaired the Forum, the federal Minister of Health was Vice Chair and 24 members from across Canada with significant and particular expertise in and knowledge of health and the health care system acted as the other sitting members. The Forum officially ended its operations in June 1997.

Reports

The Forum published two final reports, Canada Health Action: Building on the Legacy. Vol. I: Final Report and Canada Health Action: Building on the Legacy: Vol. II: Synthesis Reports and Issue Papers, in February 1997.

The recommendations were organized under four themes:

  • Values;
  • Striking a balance;
  • Determinants of health; and
  • Evidence-based decision making.
