Drugs and Sport

Drug use and abuse in sports is as relevant an issue to high school students as it is to high-profile professional athletes. The use of performance-enhancing drugs goes beyond elite athletes to involve a significant number of young people who are concerned with their performance and appearance.

Drugs and Sport: The Score
This 22-page booklet, was produced through the collaboration of the RCMP, the Canadian Centre for Drug Free Sport, and the Sports Medicine Council of British Columbia. This booklet outlines the law, widely-abused sport-related drugs, how to recognize symptoms, the importance of prevention, and a list of provincial resource agencies. It is well suited to a senior high school audience, parents, community groups, coaches, athletes, and is a useful tool for presentations on the subject.

Drugs and Sport; The Game Plan
This is a lesson plan for police educators containing material appropriate to high school students but the content is easily modified to suit other groups.

The goal of the lesson plan is to provide students with accurate information about the current issues and the legal and health consequences of drug abuse in sport. The plan includes six short presentation modules, complete with overhead transparencies, and encompasses a suggested sixty-minute instruction session. A short video entitled "Nature of Things: Pretence of Performance" and a collection of reference material are included.
