Avian Influenza - Surveillance

  • The purpose of the serological survey is to determine the prevalence of the H5 and H7 avian influenza virus in the major commercial poultry sectors, i.e. chicken, turkeys, ducks (indoors) geese and possibly quails and pheasant (indoors).
  • The samples will be taken in federally inspected poultry slaughter houses.

Avian Influenza - Surveillance

  • The samples will be taken mainly in federally inspected poultry slaughter houses.
  • The survey design follow the demographic of each poultry sector to be identified based upon the Data Collection Centres of Statistics Canada and/or the poultry industry
  • Jan. - Feb. 2005

Avian Influenza - Surveillance

  • Collection planned to start end of FY 2004-2005 and is expected to last up to 3 - 4 months
  • Samples will be screened by the ELISA at NCFAD
  • Results confirmed by the agar gel immunodiffusion test (Influenza type A)
  • Subtyped for H5 and H7

West: 33% of samples
Ontario: 30% of samples
Québec: 26% of samples
Atlantic: 11% of samples

Total = 8000 samples
