Enhanced Farm Weather Forecast Program
2006 will mark the 8th cropping season that the Enhanced Farm Weather Forecast Program will be offered by the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture.
The Enhanced Farm Weather Forecast Service is a cooperative project of the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture and ENvironment Canada.
The goal of the program is to provide primary producers from the various areas of the province with a weather forecast specific
to their area and their farming activities. This includes weather information of particular interest to farmers such
as the drying index, daily evapotranspiration estimates and growing degree day accumulations.
The forecasts are faxed or e-mailed to producers at 5:00 am daily and can be used to assist in planning field work,
schedule spraying or arrange any other weather dependent task. This site specific weather forecast is the output of a weather simulation model developed
at the Maritimes Weather Centre in Dartmouth and the Canadian Climate Centre in Montreal.
Site specific forecast are available for the O'Leary, Kensington, Harrington, and Souris areas.
The model generates a forecast specific for the area surrounding of each of the provincial weather monitoring stations.
The weather prediction model provides a means of delivering detailed weather information to
producers at a reasonable cost.
