OTTAWA — December 1, 2006 — Approximately 1,000 Magic Mega Game Plug and Play units were seized on Wednesday when the "A" Division RCMP Federal Investigations Unit searched businesses located at three malls: the St. Laurent Centre and Rideau Centre in Ottawa and Les Promenades de l'Outaouais in Gatineau. The investigation targeted the distribution and sale of counterfeit video games. Each unit contained over 150 video games. This matter is still under investigation

In Canada, the RCMP is responsible for the enforcement of the Copyright Act. Every year, RCMP investigations result in charges being laid against more than 400 people and/or companies. Criminal offences under the Copyright Act are punishable by fines of up to $1 million or by imprisonment for a term of up to five years.

The illegal distribution of counterfeit software and other intellectual property inflicts billions of dollars of financial loss on legitimate businesses, governments and taxpayers in Canada and around the world. RCMP intelligence indicates that organized crime groups are now involved in many counterfeiting rings.

As the holiday shopping season begins, it is important to remember that counterfeit goods are usually cheaply made and fail to meet Canadian safety standards. Some items, such as electronic and electrical components, may therefore pose safety risks. Counterfeit merchandise is not guaranteed and is not supported by customer service after the sale.

The RCMP encourages anyone with suspicions about counterfeit merchandise to contact the product's manufacturer. The manufacturer will then report copyright infringement to the RCMP.
