Remediation of Contaminated Sites
The Government of Canada is actively involved in environmental remediation right across Canada. The Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan has recently been established with commitments of: 3.5 billion dollars in spending over the next 15 years on the remediation of federal contaminated sites. 500 million dollars will be directed towards shared responsibility sites as well. For example, Public Works and Government Services Canada is working with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs to provide technical support for the cleanup of several abandoned gold mines in the Northwest Territories and former Distant Early Warning (DEW) military sites in Nunavut.
