Example Scenario

COMPONENT 1 and COMPONENT 2: Commodity and Environmental Improvement
- Step 1
- Document saved under new name
- Step 2
- The 5 commodities that have the highest spend are: computers, professional
services, cleaning products, office
supplies, clothing and textiles.
- Step 3
- All 5 commodities have been evaluated
- Step 4
- See Chart for outcome
- Step 5
- Computers, Office Supplies and Cleaning Products have the highest
opportunity for environmental improvements. In line with the policies
of my department, I chose cleaning products as it has the highest environmental
impacts of the 5 commodities and its feasibility in terms of operational
requirements is fairly high (selection of the commodity is at the discretion
of the department and based on departmental policies and priorities).
Computer and office supplies would also have been valid selections.
- Step 6
- Green house gas emissions and air contaminants and toxic and hazardous
chemicals and substances are the environmental attributes that have
the highest environmental impact. Green procurement actions could therefore
include: altering specifications to ensure that the cleaning products
are non-toxic, phosphate free and have biodegradable ingredients.
COMPONENT 3: Green Procurement Action Plan
We will alter specifications in our request for proposal to include
environmental performance measures.
COMPONENT 4: Quantifiable Measure
75% of cleaning products are covered under a departmental individual
standing offer, which is scheduled for renewal in 2006.
COMPONENT 5: Timeline
Our department's Sustainable Development Strategy has Green procurement
targets set on a yearly basis. Since the new standing offer(s) should
be in place in 2006, the target can be set for 2007.
Green Procurement Target:
Based on the assessment here is a sample green procurement target: By
December 2007, we plan reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air contaminants
as well as reduce the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals and substances
by altering specifications to ensure that 75% of cleaning products are
non-toxic, phosphate free and have biodegradable ingredients.

More Instructions
- If there are less than 5 commodities, make sure that the scores are
at zero for the remaining available commodity sheets.
- If there are more than 5 commodities,
- Place yourself on the commodity # 1 tab; click “Move or
Copy…”; “under Before sheet:” highlight “(move
to end)”; place a checkmark beside ‘Create a copy”;
click “ok”.
- Change the name of the sheet to Commodity # 6 or the name of
your commodity.
- Go to the Chart sheet. It is the first of the sheets. From the
Chart itself, right-click and go to “source data”;
Under the “series” tab, click “Add”; next
to name, type the name of your sheet (commodity # 6 or commodity
name); next to the X-value, click on the icon with the red arrow
(you then must go back to the Commodity # 6 sheet and click on
the cell that corresponds to the Grand Total for the x-axis (cell
C 24), then do the same for the y-axis (cell C 12). Repeat process
for more commodities.
- You may rename the commodity sheets as applicable.
