Health Care System

Access/Waiting Times

Knowing that you can access the health care services you need, when you need it, is important to Canadians. Canada's health care system is committed to reducing waiting times and taking concrete steps to improve access to diagnostic services.

Renewal agendas set by the federal, provincial and territorial first ministers in 2000 and 2003 have led to significant progress. The agreement reached at the September 2004 First Ministers' Meeting built on this work, and highlighted further work required to reduce the time Canadians wait to receive care and to increase their access to health care services.

The Prime Minister and all the premiers and territorial leaders signed A Ten-year Plan to Strengthen Health Care to support health renewal and reform, with a focus on ensuring that Canadians have access to the care they need, when they need it.
