Eligibility and Conditions

Eligibility

Fellowship candidates must hold, or be completing, a doctoral level degree, (ex.:a PhD) or a second entry health professional degree [ex.: an MD, a DVM, a DDS, a D.Pharm., or equivalent level] from a recognized university in a scientific discipline. For the purposes of this program, "scientific discipline" will be interpreted broadly so as to include those biological, physical, environmental and social science disciplines that are required for undertaking work within Health Canada's mandate. Fellowships will be granted conditional on the candidate having completed all the requirements for a doctoral level or second entry professional degree within six months of an offer of a fellowship by Health Canada.

Candidates with a second entry health professional degree must have a minimum of six years of university education. To be considered in this category, applicants must have a valid license to practice their profession in Canada.

Candidates with more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the time of the competition deadline will normally not be eligible for an award. A reasonable interruption (ex.:parental leave) in a candidate's postdoctoral training may be taken into account in determining eligibility.

Candidates are discouraged from undertaking postdoctoral training in the same research environment where they obtained their PhD. Candidates whose doctoral studies were supervised by a Health Canada researcher will normally not be eligible for a Health Canada Postdoctoral Fellowship. However, consideration may be given to an applicant who has completed his or her graduate work within Health Canada if he or she is seeking a fellowship that will support his or her research in a substantially different area.

Health Canada employees (term, indeterminate) are not eligible to apply to this program as a potential postdoctoral fellow.

This program is open to qualified Canadian citizens and landed immigrants who are resident in Canada or abroad. Under special circumstances non-Canadians may also be considered for fellowships, although priority will normally be given to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants.

Conditions

Fellowships will be awarded for a period of up to two years, but continuation of the fellowship for a second year will depend on satisfactory progress in the research and the recommendation of the mentor.

All candidates must submit proof of completion of their degree (as detailed above) prior to commencing the fellowship.

All fellows must provide proof of life insurance and provincial health insurance. If fellows or their family members are not eligible for provincial health insurance either temporarily or permanently, they will be required to obtain coverage from a private insurance company.

It is the joint responsibility of the candidate and the mentor to ensure that approval of the proposed research program has been received from the Animal Care Committee and/or the Research Ethics Board, as appropriate. No funding will be released from the Office of the Chief Scientist until such approval has been obtained.

Support obtained through the Postdoctoral Fellowship program shall be acknowledged in any paper published describing the work undertaken by the candidate and/or mentor, and the mentor shall notify the Office of the Chief Scientist of such publications when they go to press.

Grant recipients will be required to sign a formal agreement.
