How to Contact the Labour Program

  • Contracting with the Canadian Government: Construction - The Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act specifies that persons who enter into a contract with the federal government regarding construction, remodelling, repair or demolition, must follow certain rules in relation to their employees.
  • Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service – Conciliation and mediation assistance to resolve collective bargaining disputes for those employers and trade unions subject to the Canada Labour Code.
  • Federal Workers’ Compensation - The Labour Program administers the Government Employees’ Compensation Act, which provides benefits to employees of the federal government who have been injured while at work.
  • Fire Prevention services are provided to federal departments and agencies, First Nations and certain Crown corporations. Fire Protection Services staff develop and administer fire protection policies and safety standards.
  • Labour Education and Training develops and disseminates educational material pertaining to the provisions of the Canada Labour Code and other legislation and programs administered by the Labour Branch.
  • Labour Management Partnerships Program – A program designed to encourage effective labour-management relations in the workplace or at the sectoral level by providing funding assistance that supports efforts by unions and employers to jointly explore new ways of working, and of working together.
  • Labour Standards – The Labour Program establishes and protects employees’ rights through legislation and regulations governing labour standards for employees under federal jurisdiction.
  • Occupational Health and Safety - Preventing workplace accidents and injuries that could adversely affect employees’ health through legislation and regulations governing occupational health and safety for work places under federal jurisdiction.
  • Strategic Policy and International Labour Affairs tracks changes occurring in the workplace, provides policy options regarding workplace and labour-related issues, coordinates relations with provincial and territorial governments on labour matters, produces reports and analyses on Canadian labour laws, manages Canada's participation in the International Labour Organization and other international bodies, and leads in the negotiation and implementation of bilateral and multilateral labour cooperation agreements.
  • Equity - Workplace Equity programs include the Legislated Employment Equity Program (LEEP), the Federal Contractors Program (FCP), the Separate Employers Initiative and the Equal Pay Program.
  • Workplace Information and Innovation – The Workplace Information Directorate is your source for up-to-date, customized information on industrials relations and collective bargaining.
