HEALTH HAZARD ALERTMINISTER ORDERS MANDATORY RECALL OF LABONTÉ BRAND NATURAL HONEY FROM BLUEBERRY BLOSSOMS WHICH MAY CONTAIN NITROFURANSOTTAWA, April 3, 2004 - The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Honourable Robert Speller, has issued a mandatory recall order for Labonté brand Natural Honey from Blueberry Blossoms as the product may be contaminated with nitrofurans. The mandatory recall order requires all persons selling, marketing or distributing the product to recall it. Earlier today, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a health hazard alert warning the public not to consume Labonté brand Natural Honey from Blueberry Blossoms Canada No. 1 Golden Liquid as the product may be contaminated with nitrofurans. The earlier health hazard alert can be viewed at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2004/20040403e.shtml The affected product is sold in a 500 g container with the lot code 033196. The product is a blend of Canadian and Argentine Honey. This product may have been distributed nationally. Nitrofurans are antimicrobial drugs which are banned for use in Canada in food producing animals. Consumption of foods contaminated with nitrofurans may pose a human health risk related to the inherent toxicity of the drug and the potential to cause allergies. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
