Court Fines Chris Brothers Meats and Delicatessen Ltd. $2,000 for contravening the Meat Inspection ActOn August 5, 2004, Chris Brothers Meats and Delicatessen Ltd., a meat processing company based at 984 Cole Harbor Road, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia pled guilty in Provincial Court in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to one count of contravening subsection 5.(a) of the Meat Inspection Act. An investigation conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) determined that on or about July 10, 2002 at or near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the accused illegally applied or used the federal meat inspection legend without the necessary regulatory authorization on boxes packed with meat products from and in a non-federally registered facility. Section 5. (a) of the Meat Inspection Act states:
The Court sentenced the accused to a fine of $2,000. CFIA prosecution bulletins report on legal proceedings in which a conviction has been obtained. In publishing them, we are seeking to increase awareness of the Agencys role in enforcing the Acts and Regulations for which it is responsible.
